I first decided to pick up a bottle of SkullSplitter because it's got a righteous picture of a proud Viking warrior on the label. This son of Thor is decked out in a winged helmet, fur cape and a pretty sweet beard. I was sold the second I saw this label. Maybe it was buyers remorse but as soon as I got home I started planning for the worst. I thought this beer is probably all marketing and it just a light lager in a cleverly Vikinged bottle. As it turns out, this beer is definitely worthy of the label.

Orkney Brewery's SkullSplitter is a Scotch Ale that has a great flavor. This beer has a splash of Scotch flavor right up front along with some sweet malt the finishes a little dry with a hint of floral hops. That Scotchy flavor is what really makes this beer great. The SkullSplitter tastes like a nice smooth Scotch Whiskey with a lightly hopped finish. My first impression of this beer was that it tasted like it'd been oak aged but as I went back for a second and third drink I noticed it was the warm alcohol flavor I was equating with being oaked. This beer is so smooth and easy to drink that I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a stronger beer with a great flavor. Scotch fans will definitely appreciate the flavor and finish.
