HopDevil - Victory Brewing Co., Downingtown
Victory HopDevil is a year round IPA out of Downingtown, PA. It's 6.7% alcohol and brewed with some mediocre hops and barley. I don't know a whole lot more about this beer because I'm completely disinterested in it. It's an IPA that has a reference to hops in its name and it comes from a brewery I don't really care too much about. I'm trying to keep an open mind because I felt the same way about Hopslam and it ended up being one of the best beers I've ever had. I'm hopeful for HopDevil, but I won't be surprised if it's just another IPA I'll never drink again.
The HopDevil pours a deep orange and almost amber color. It's darker than expected, looking more like an Imperial IPA. The head on this beer doesn't hang around for too long, it's a patchy white layer of suds that leaves only a little lacing along the sides of your glass.
Victory HopDevil smells great. It has a prominent citrus hop aroma that is sweet and robust. The flavor is a complete 180 from what I was expecting after smelling this beer. Rather than sweet citrusy hop flavors, I was greeted with a mouth full of bitter straw flavored tea. There's a little malt in the finish but the lighter hops I enjoyed in the aroma are suddenly nowhere to be found. It was disappointing to say the least...
If you really like bitter IPAs, Victory HopDevil has what you're looking for. If you prefer an IPA with more hop flavor than bitterness, this will disappoint you just as much as it did me.
