Postulator: Speaking of Doppelbocks...

Filed under:

Boulevard's recent announcement of their Seeyoulator Doppelbock got me thinking about the naming conventions associated with Doppelbocks. As you may, or may not, know - Doppelbocks tend to have names that end in ATOR, for example: Maximator, Celebrator and so on. You can thank Paulaner for this, they started the tradition back in the 1700s with their Salvator beer. Nowadays Doppelbocks are less about fasting your way through the Easter season and more about drinking a big beer with a cool name that ends in -ator. There are plenty of good Doppelbocks out there, and most of them stick to the naming tradition, but I thought I'd come up with a list of names that end in -ator which I'd like to see on a beer label.

Not all of these are serious, or terribly mature, but it's all done in good fun. If you take offense to anything you see here then it probably means you haven't been exposed to enough bottles of Doppelbock.

So here you are, my ultimate list of Doppelbock names:

Desecrator: This one is so obvious, I'm surprised no one has claimed it
Corruptor: Tagline for this one, "A beer so good it'll turn you bad"
Alienator: For the anti-social drinkers
Insulator: If I saw this on the shelf on a cold night I'd totally buy one
Abdicator: Slap a picture of Edward VIII on the side of the bottle and your all set
Piscator: Perfect name for a Dogfish Head Dopplebock
Titillator: I'm shocked no brewery has picked this one up
Percolator: Coffee Doppelbock
Masticator: Mmm, chewy beer
Impersonator: Dress this one up like a bottle of wine
Fornicator: Self explanitory...
Debilitator: If you're in the mood to get plowed, this bock's for you
Demonstrator: Join the protest against bad beer, har har har
Discriminator: The beer for racists and bigots
Subjugator: In case Dictator is already taken
Spectator: Maybe you want to watch from a safe distance...
Urinator: It'd probably still sell much better than you'd think

That might be a good place to stop. I'm sure there are plenty of good names I've left out. Let me know if you come up with any other good ones in the comment section.

Inebriator

I'm a homebrewer and made a doppelbock a couple years back called Inebriator. I made a label for it featuring a passed-out monk. My friends thought it was pretty funny. Beer wasn't too bad, either.

Very good post, thanks a lot.
